FANTASY FOOTBALL DAILY DISH: E.J. MANUEL ERA BEGINS IN BUFFALO

By Eric C. Wright

Lots of news to get to in the Daily Dish so let's begin:

-The E.J. Manuel era is set to start in Buffalo in Week 1 versus the New England Patriots as the rookie out of Florida State has fully recovered from the knee scope that originally had his status in doubt.  After lighting things up in his two preseason starts, showing a better passing ability than expected, Manuel became an overnight fantasy football sleeper candidate.  However the knee issue dulled things until he returned to practice on Monday.  Now Manuel is set to go and once again he is back to sleeper status given he is just the latest in the new NFL craze of the read option passer.  Manuel should be picked up in leagues where available due to that potential but don't even think of starting him until we see how he does when the bullets start to fly.

-Amazing recovery for Pittsburgh Steelers rookie RB LeVeon Bell who head coach Mike Tomlin shockingly said Tuesday that he would miss Week 1 due to not practicing and not due to the foot injury he suffered in the preseason.  After originally being told he would miss between 4-6 weeks which had Bell's return sometime in October, the player himself admitted he was almost fully healthy and ready to return.  Of course now that Tomlin has seconded this notion means that the rookie could return as soon as Week 2 which is tremendous news for those who got Bell on the cheap in drafts the last few weeks.  He could very well fulfill almost all of the hype he had when training camp began.

-New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez is likely out until Week 3 due to the shoulder injury he suffered in the team's third preseason game.  Rookie Geno Smith will draw the start and could run with the job if he shows even a modicum of positive signs.  The fact Brady Quinn was brought in to be the backup is also leading to speculation Sanchez will be released outright.

-Good signs for Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson who has been cleared to practice after knee surgery last month.  While Nelson has not officially been named to start Sunday, a team source says he "will be out there."  Nelson remains a better standard league receiver due to his ability to get into the end zone as opposed to PPR where he never has caught 80 passes.

-The Giants worked out Beanie Wells and Jonathan Dwyer and are expected to sign a veteran back to complement second-year speedster David Wilson.

-Denver Broncos star CB Champ Bailey is looking doubtful for the team's season opener which is good news for Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco and WR Torrey Smith.

That's all for now.  Check back for more later.
